Michael’s Blog – Celebrating 20 Years: What’s Next for SMART Recovery?

Good to see the mainstream starting to recognize that options are important (as they have always been) for those in recovery.

It saddens me to think that there are still people working in the field of substance use and addictions that self-promote their choice of recovery as the only way. Not only is that unethical – it is harmful to their clients.

No single treatment is right for everyone. The best treatment addresses an individual’s various needs, not just his or her drug abuse. Matching treatment settings, programs, and services to a person’s unique problems and level of need is key to his or her ultimate success in returning to a productive life. It is important for the treatment approach to be broad in scope, taking into account a person’s age, gender, ethnicity, and culture. The severity of addiction and previous efforts to stop using drugs can also influence a treatment approach. (NIDA)

SMART Recovery celebrated its 20th anniversary in Washington, D.C., September 26 through 28, at the National Geographic headquarters. Written by Michael Walsh

One day in 2002 I found myself in a detox facility off of Main & Hastings in Downtown Vancouver. That was one side of the double-life I was living while using alcohol and drugs. The other side was a successful career that provided me a great life. My problems with alcohol and drug dependence cost me many things in life. I lost jobs, friendships, relationships, and myself because of it. I started my recovery process at 35 and today I am happy I made that choice when I did.

I can now proudly say I am practiced at the art of a clean and sober life – and it’s a great life. I share this so you know I have been where you are. Know that you are not alone.
