Recovery Coaching During the COVID Pandemic
by Michael Walsh
Because of COVID-19, we have moved much of our work with clients to video and telephone. The exception is Interventions which we can do in-person on a case-by-case basis or by working with the family through video if not too complex of a situation.
The Covid era has prompted us to shift how we work with clients — somewhat. Much of our work already utilized video, telephone and text so how we are currently working is not that different for us. Pre-Intervention work is often mostly done via technology until the day of the in-person "family meeting" so this has not changed how we work.
For many of our Recovery Coaching and Family Consulting clients, much of the work has often been a combination of in-person and video or telephone sessions. In saying that, moving completely to technology based work has been and is very effective. We are also mindful that certain situations require a different approach that may not allow for technology-based work and we are able to assess in the early stages of client contact should we need to approach differently.
The health and safety of our clients, service partners and staff is of utmost importance. We are following necessary protocols as an Essential Services Provider no matter where we are working.
1. Do the services we provide really work without being in person?
We have been using technology since inception of the business and it works very well. There are some excellent reviews and studies available around the delivery and efficacy of services such as: coaching, tele-health, tele-medicine, psychotherapy, counselling and virtual-healthcare services.
Another great benefit of engaging in technology based delivery of mental wellness services is you don't have to go anywhere which saves time and lowers stress and anxiety — no driving, no parking, no waiting in an office and no privacy issues — it's all done in the comfort of your home. And if there are multiple family members we can connect everyone no matter where they are.
2. What video-conferencing platforms do you use?
3. Is video-conferencing HIPAA and/or PIPEDA compliant?
Huh, what is HIPAA and what is PIPEDA? Zoom, Skype and Duo is both HIPAA and PIPEDA compliant. FaceTime is not "compliant" as they would not sign an agreement. However, FaceTime has declared they have significant security and digital encryption software that is safe from intrusion and we feel there is no issue with using FaceTime as technology suitable to our work.
HIPAA is a US federal law that governs the privacy and security of personal health information (PHI) for only certain entities in the health industry – mainly healthcare providers, health insurers, and health exchange organizations. On top of that, health information is also governed by any additional state laws.
In Canada, PIPEDA applies to all personal data, health or otherwise regardless of the entity. However, it is wise to note that the specifics of PIPEDA may not apply to every province. Each individual province has the right to have its own rules and regulations as long as they are “substantially similar” to PIPEDA. You can check out our list below which provinces choose to use PIPEDA and which have their own governances.
4. Are you taking on new clients currently?
Yes! We are responsive to inquiries and often able to take on a new client within a day if all the administrative work and retainer is taken care of quickly.
